Today I’m going to show you how to create the waterfall braid, I love how easy this is once you get the hang of it! I just came up with a great way to wear the waterfall braid as a DIY style a week or two ago, right before Mass, and loved it so much I wore it two or three times that week!
The funny thing is, I wasn’t really into wearing waterfall braids on myself until recently. I don’t know why, because it’s such a pretty braid!
I hope this tutorial will help you all to learn how to do this easy DIY waterfall braid look!
Another thing I think is amazing about waterfall braids is the fact that they work even on really short hair, I’ve seen them done on a-line bob hair cuts ect. (which is pretty short) and they work really well! So I would definitely give this hairstyle a tick for almost every length of hair! 😉
Time requirement: 4-8 minutes, (it depends on your hair length)
Difficulty: Medium
Items needed: 1-2 small rubber hair ties, and a comb, (hairspray is optional)
Step-by-step instructions:
- To begin with take a small section from one side of the hair in the front and separate the hair into 3 sections..
- For the first stitch of this braid, you actually just do the first step for a french braid..
- I actually do two complete stitches of a french braid before beginning the waterfall braid on the heaver side of my hair..
- Once you get to the third stitch of the braid, you now drop the right hand piece and let it fall out of the way.
- Now pick up a small section of hair to add back into the braid and add it back as the right hand piece. You have basically just dropped the right hand strand and replaced it with a new strand in the exact same location.
- Now take that right hand strand and cross it over the middle strand.…
- You then add hair to the top strand {this is exactly what you would do with a regular French braid}and cross it over the middle strand…
- You have now just finished your third stitch of the braid at this point.
- Repeat steps 2-7 over and over again until you get to the middle of the back of your head..
- Using the three remaining strands, create a basic braid down about half way and secure with an elastic or clip for now..
- Essentially you’re just doing a french braid the whole time, only you drop the bottom strand each time over and pick up some more hair from just behind the strand you’ve dropped and continue…
- Repeat steps 2-10 on the other side, but as I mentioned I only did the extra stitch of a normal french braid on the heavy side of my hair, so don’t do it for the other half..(trust me it’s really not as complicated as it all sounds 😉 )
- Now take the two braids and secure them together tightly at the middle of your head…
- I didn’t really like how the braids looked just tied together at the back, so I did a flip-under (the pictures should explain..)
And there you have the DIY waterfall braid! I hope you enjoyed this tutorial. 🙂
